It isn't /required/ to use synclient and SHMConfig; one can use the configuration in xorg.conf if he wants. For temporary fiddling, though, synclient is a nice and simple way to get the friction settings just right.
The patch is a bit troublesome because some of it is in a list of variables that loves to change. Shouldn't be too tough to copy and paste it manually, since it's very little code for now.
