Το GNOME είναι registered trademark για το GNOME Foundation από το 2006, http://tsdr.uspto.gov/#caseNumber=76368848&caseType=SERIAL_NO&searchType=statusSearch Το ζήτημα είναι ότι μπορείς να κάνεις trademark την ίδια λέξη σε προϊόντα που ανήκουν σε διαφορετικούς τομείς της οικονομίας. Για αναζήτηση στο USPTO, http://tmsearch.uspto.gov/bin/gate.exe?f=searchss&state=4806:x98uyp.1.1 και υπάρχουν ήδη άλλα trademark για το GNOME σε προϊόντα για άρδευση και για cloud computing.
