If you need a quick fix to get windows xp back, you can always boot
from any xp cd, go to the recovery console and type fixboot and
fixmbr. Mind you, this will get rid of GRUB from the master boot
record. It will not affect the installed Ubuntu OS. You can later
reinstall GRUB and experiment more. In the future, you might want to
create a backup first.
