Free is a choice of word which, in English, is unfortunately ambiguous. Also everybody knows there is no such thing as a free lunch. Don't they? I DO know that Ubuntu (and FOSS) is different, and a catchy phrase would be very useful. [...] > Where do they go for help with their Windows problems? I think a push of both paid support (by Canonical and > partners) and awareness about LoCo teams is helpful. I believe that friends or family members (fofm) are the bedrock support networks for most peoples' Windows. LoCo activity and Ubuntu Hour meet-ups are tantalisingly close to touching the fofm networks. I asked the manager of a large PC store near me if I could hand leaflets out and/or do demonstrations (of Ubuntu) at his store. He asked 'Can I sell it?' I said, well, it is free. He said 'not interested'. I asked a trader at a PC market fair stall if he used Linux. 'Yes' he said. I asked why none of his PCs on sale had it installed? 'People want Windows' said he. But they get malware and trounble I said. 'If they want to pay me 50 pounds to sort it out I am happy to help!' he smiled. -- alan cocks, Ubuntu user.
