Rather than hitting right to decend into the menus and left to ascend back to the top, I believe themes generally require hitting OK to decend and BACK to ascend in the menus. The default behavior for all themes prior to 0.22 is what you see now in the Mythbuntu theme. This default behavior had to change in 0.22 because in 0.22 themes are now allowed to have horizontal menus (example http://www.mythtv.org/w/images/7/71/Terra_menu3.png). If you open the theme chooser and download another theme (IIRC, steppes) you should see this behavior of having to hit OK rather than RIGHT to decend into a menu.
