I actually go a little further than described; my setup is like this.

Boot into chromeos, startup chroot (command line)
set display server to aura
startup a minimal fluxbox (for window management of my x11 apps)
launch xchat, geany, skype, whatever from the chroot

I swap between say a chrome os window and my X11 app using the super+tab
key. You essentially have chrome os with aura running and all of it's app
at the same time you have fuxbox and your X11 apps running. The integration
isn't perfect, but it works very nicely for me. The default setup has you
completely switching VT's between them.
