The question is how long does it take and again, you're talking of small photos, a photo for the wall should be a little bit larger. Without doubt 35mm can become problematic for poster formats too. I suspect the only less expensive art is writing. Drawing, music, photography, perhaps even dancing need some expensive equipment. I always wonder why music paper is that much more expensive than writing paper.
