PS: On my Arch Linux install dkms builds vbox modules, but I first need to install the linux headers and then the linux image, if I do it the other way around, I need to run dkms manually or to reinstall the linux image, since the hook to run dkms is triggered by the image package. Since dkms doesn't need to build anything for my Ubuntu install, I don't know how it's handled for Ubuntu.
