i seriously doubt that 64 bit support will be dropped at all by anyone. every 
single processor that's made now is 64 bit. 32 bit should be what's dropped 
because of the obsolescence of 32 bit. 32 bit only gives you 2GB of RAM to work 
with and so many other limitations. I highly doubt there'll be a step backwards.

Ralf: the only answer i can give you is to do a clean install of a 64 bit 
version of ubuntu. there's really no way to go from 32 to 64 bit with an 
upgrade or whateve. only a clean install will take care of that. sorry.
