-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 (Just to take this slightly off-topic as the BBC ramps up its anti-hacker story)
The another issue that the BBC constantly gets wrong (and the rest of the media) is this whole 'hacker' business, it annoys me that fraudsters can be around for centuries, from alchemists to money launderers yet the moment they evolve to the use of computers they automatic become HACKERS! And this is not even about the difference between hackers (see ESR[1]) and hackers (see 'the hacker manifesto'[2]) as I believe both sides are exactly the same. This is about the difference between hackers and those who use hacker methods to steal from people and do things that are not for the common good. Something which both types of hackers disagree with. I think the media has been confused by two groups that are on the same side complaining about the same thing in different directions... for example; Hackers [1] tell the media that hackers are those who have "technical adeptness and a delight in solving problems and overcoming limits" (that's a quote from ESR). and hackers[2] saying ... well ... exactly the same, OK hackers[2] bend the occasional law in their problem solving and exploration, however usually these are laws that should have never existed in the first place... like the DMCA. I think its about time we stop this infighting, of two fractions that are of the same heritage and instead focus not on getting the word hacker back from each other but on getting it back from the media who is tarring us all with the fraudster brush each and every time they do a story. I'm proud to be a hacker[1][2], I hope you lot are too. </rant> - - Daniel [1] http://catb.org/~esr/faqs/hacker-howto.html [2] http://www.mithral.com/~beberg/manifesto.html -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.2.2 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFFKoVtHrnYUCIdbBsRArU8AKDVNDTNt1TlNLSvKBvsvJVUkYnGwwCgl3nA VP/fQsZgd17HBTBOs9FwhZU= =2Xpo -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.kubuntu.org/UKTeam/
