If you go into the recovery mode, as specified on that link I sent,
you should be able to drop directly to a root prompt without requiring
your username and password.

That page assumes you don't know your username/password... that's why it says...

"If you've ever forgotten your password, you aren't aloneā€¦ it's
probably one of the most common tech support problems I've encountered
over the years. Luckily if you are using Ubuntu they made it
incredibly easy to reset your password."
