I tend to use aptitude rather than apt-get on the command line (i.e. sudo aptitude install foo rather than sudo apt-get install foo). I'm not sure why, do be honest. I *think* it's because way back in the day a mailing list post pointed out that aptitude worked better at resolving dependancy problems (or at least appeared to be more straightforward) and at the time I had deb and repositories and allsorts scattered all over. I don't tend to do this nowadays, so it's not really an issue.
