Thanks all of you for the rapid response.  I had forgotten that I could 
re-partition the hdd to create space for Linux without wiping the XP 
installation; and I don't think I ever realised you could import from 
the Microsoft email folders, without needing to export from the Outlook 
application.

I think this evening will be spent playing with my USB hdd and 
clonezilla, just to make sure I know what's going on.
