You might check out ElpaTech : http://www.elpatech.co.uk/basic.htm Talk to Ed Bernard and tell him I sent you. He's very amenable to do almost anything, and he might be able to tell you which barebones netbooks are available and known to work OK with Ubuntu. He only does sesktops, but is very helpful.
