With 4GB of RAM it should not need to swap.
This sounds bang on the money to me and mirrors my own experience. Firefox and Thunderbird use up quite a lot of RAM, but my laptop has 6GB and I still have the same problem periodically. I haven't yet managed to narrow it down, though, so I've been unable to offer any useful information.
