I've seen that on some machines, but some years ago - before the last LTS.

I cured it by updating the kernel. You know that newer kernels are
backported to LTS versions?

You can install them under the names:

linux-image-generic-quantal
linux-image-generic-raring
linux-image-generic-saucy

There are also PAE versions and so on.
