Many thanks to Bryce Harrington for providing a solution.

Running x64 Jaunty w/ ATI 3850 and ati driver version 9.6. No real
sideeffects noticed so far. I should however note that the glxgears
score has dropped (6800fps ->1500 fps) as was to be expected (Martin
Olsson mentioned reduced 3D performance above).

Steps taken to apply solution. (This might not be the most correct
method though ;)

Imported key:
sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com
0x643dc6bd56580ceb1ab4a9f63b22ab97af1cdfa9
(Thanks bitsteller)

Amended the sources list following line using:
gksu gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
by adding:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-x-swat/xserver-no-backfill/ubuntu jaunty
main

Reloaded list in synaptics.

Located the ppa under the Origin tab.

Right-clicked xserver-common and xserver-xorg-core and selected upgrade.

Rebooted.
