I just wanted to say!!! POST #7 and #8 from Milton COMPLETELY FIXED MY FLICKERING PROBLEM!!! I am running a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 on a ATI Radeon X1300 512MB AGP Graphics card, 1.2Gb RAM, and a 2.0GHZ Sempron +2800 Processor. I have had this flickering problem ever since I FRESH installed Ubuntu 10.10 from 10.04. I could never find a working solution *AND* Keep Compiz's desktop effects working but this worked perfectly!!! One thing I would like to mention is that in step #8, while running the links commands, I noticed in my terminal that my *fglrx- modaliases* got removed and so I went ahead and ran the command it explains after "Optionally, if you want the proprietary fglrx/Catalyst driver to be installable through the Restricted Hardware Driver Manager (a.k.a. jockey), you'll need to:" then changed the little command line in grub, restarted and within 5 mins. flicker gone and everything is running perfectly!
