I found that solution in some forum (alas, I don't remember which one). But the relevant thing is that this problem is affecting a lot of ubuntu users since 10.04 at least (which means, almost a year), and there wasn't a solution even if there are tons of complains in forums an blogs. Today they launched new xserver-xorg-vide-ati and xserver-xorg- vide-radeon packages, but I don't know if there is a fix in them (and I don't want to rollback this workaround to see if they did it).
