I had all kinds of problems uninstalling - the additional drivers GUI failed with "installArchives() failed" and continued to show the green light. aptitude also got very confused and couldn't uninstall it, losing the autoinstalled packages in the process. This page is very useful, and has the solution for the dpkg-divert problem:
