I had the same problem that I had on upgrade - removing the driver doesn't remove the fglrx line from xorg.conf, resulting in a hung bootup. Removing the line shows a much nicer boot screen but then only supports 640x480 after GNOME starts. Re-installing fglrx from the Additional Drivers GUI hasn't reproduced the problem for me.
