I have the same issue with a HP NC6120 laptop - all fine with 11.04 and earlier. It happens every time the system "sleeps" - the screen goes blank but I know it is still "working" as I have a pixel fault on the LCD screen showing a solid vertical line which has been there for years. After a few minutes the screen goes almost completely dead - i.e. the backlight has been turned off and the dead pixel line is not visible. When the system resumes the password unlock screen appears but I cannot really see it. I then enter my password then go blindly to the System menu top right, cursor down 10 times to the Shutdown menu and select Shutdown by pressing enter or left cursor across twice for Restart.
