Hi Callum, you won't like to hear this but it sounds like you have two
separate bugs.  The backlight issue you just mentioned is a legitimate
issue (but probably kernel or power manager rather than xorg), however
the bug report you filed was triggered by a 'false GPU lockup', which
means that your graphics card experienced a momentary lockup during
boot, but was able to recover from it and continue on.

We've gotten quite a few GPU lockup bug reports, and since you didn't
mention the other bug you're having, I've duped a bunch of these other
false GPU lockup bug reports to this one.  So, I would recommend that
you create a new bug report for the backlight issue, so that we can
handle that as a higher severity bug.
