I don't know if this is helpful/relevant/already mentioned, but this problem exists in KDE too. The only difference is that the windows are black instead of white. It happens in Kubuntu 11.04 and after a fresh install of 11.10 it still occurs.
In Kubuntu the fix is easy and immediate. In System Setting -> Desktop Effects -> Advanced untick the "Enable Direct Rendering" option. My onboard Nvidia 'GeForce 6150SE nForce 430' works flawlessly (all effects, like blur, and no more empty windows) after that. I wanted to use Unity, but there is no equivalent option in CCSM as far as I know, and searching the Ubuntu Wiki/Google yielded confusing, mixed results. I am assuming the Kubuntu issue is the same as the Ubuntu issue since the problem is exactly the same - I have used both and the behavior is identical.
