I think we may be looking at two separate (but perhaps related?) problems here, since one group of users is reporting that their mouse completely freezes, and that "synclient TouchpadOff=0" works to unfreeze the mouse, while another group - including myself - reports that the mouse and keyboard temporarily lock up (a few seconds at most), and then behave erratically afterwards (clicking and dragging windows uncontrollably).
