I just discovered that Debian and Ubuntu carry a patch which changes related 
code, and I wonder if this patch is at fault. It looks like it was introduced 
after 10.04. Can you please try to rebuild the package without this patch?
 sudo apt-get build-dep xserver-xorg-video-mga
 apt-get source xserver-xorg-video-mga
 cd xserver-xorg-video-mga-*
 sed -i '/^02_/s/^/#/' debian/patches/series
 debuild -b -us -uc
 cd ..
 sudo dpkg -i xserver-xorg-video-mga_*.deb
