Nope, no luck getting the proprietary drivers to work either.

Added a file disable-nouveau.conf in the directory /etc/modprobe.d/ with the 
following contents
     blacklist nouveau
     options nouveau modeset=0

There already was a file with blacklist nouveau (courtesy of the NVidia
proprietary driver install I guess) but tossed this in for good measure,
rebooted with NVidia card, same result as before.
