I researched the nouveau driver and it is coming along nicely. But it is simply not sufficient for what I need this machine to do. I would go back to windows on this box before resorting to using nouveau, nothing against nouveau.
However, I basically dumped gnome and unity, and am now using fluxbox. I have full 3d accel with nvidia driver 304.37 and no issues so far. In fact the performance is almost a 'order of magnitude of difference' better. Part of the reason for that is obvious. But I noticed many quirks with unity and some with gnome when using 3d. The applications when run in unity/gnome see to impact the performance of other applications, such has video hiccups, rendering slow down and the like, and noticeable stalls. That is now completely gone using fluxbox. The 3d desktop has a long ways to go in Linux. Because I am a power user/developer anyways and 3d accel is a must and a 3d desktop is not, fluxbox will be just fine. I have been stress testing the present fluxbox configuration with a full on windows 7 virtual machine, two high defs movies, tons of browser tabs, and minecraft, just to stress it. So far not a single issue. My gut tells me I am not going to have any either. However it would have been nice to have a stable unity/gnome 3d environment, hopefully you guys can resolve this bug, it effects a great number of users. Thanks for your response and will look forward to suggestions and solutions, so I can use the standard ubuntu desktop. And as stated above I had tried the edgers ppa, to no avail. So if what I have works and remains stable, then its good by windows on my favority machine! Perhaps this is not appropriate on this thread, but any suggestions on 3d graphics cards for linux, something with good 3d accel support, right now I use an nvidia 8800 GTS I carried over from my previous laptop, but I would like something in the nvidia 5xx or 6xx series or the ati radeon hd 7xxx series. Once again thanks! and I have some friends this effects to, some ppl I finally convinced to go with linux and dump windows, help me out already! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1037610 Title: xorg nvidia crashes, ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bit To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers/+bug/1037610/+subscriptions _______________________________________________ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
