You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Upgraded from 12.04 to 12.10 (64-bit both).
Now system can't start with radeon or nvidia cards, X server fails to create 
screen.
Only proprietary nvidia driver works (but not needed for me).

nouveau or radeon, both give same at end of Xorg.log:

MacPro 2008, grub 2.0, booting via efi, kms works fine.

tried 8800gt, gtx560ti, radeon 6870/6970, all with efi part allowing to
have efi bootscreen.
