Hi Martin,

I am on 12.04. Basically I tried to install Steam and it prompted for
updating of nvidia drivers. Thereafter the problem began.

Presuming it was an nvidia driver problem I did a complete purge and
installed an earlier version. Didn't work. Purged again and tried using
nouveau. Worked once then crashed and problem resumed as before.

I have read the bug feedback that mentions kernel updates but some say it
doesn't work for them.

I am considering instaling lucid lynx instead and hoping that a s clean
install will sort out the problem, whatever it is.

If you have any suggestions for a solution that I have missed that would be
great.

But the problem crash now often happens prior to the system booting ubuntu,
subverting attempts to even boot directly into safe mode or into a CLI.

I am new to Ubuntu (six months now) and don't know how to do most of the
things discussed in the forums. One thing I do know is that I need a PC
that works!

Many thanks for your time.

cheers

Simon
