Hi, I had a similar problem after an upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04 (update 2.6.28.15-generic). My laptop is an AMILO Si 2636-7002, with same graphical controler as described above. After complete reboot I discover also that Fn F8 and Fn F9 don't work anymore. With the 8.10 release all was absolutely perfect. I can precise that the applet is not working also. The only way I found to recover the full brightness is to boot to the Vista partition (that I keep for this kind of problem...) and then restart with Ubuntu. Unfortunately this little problem has a huge productive impact as the laptop is useless with a dark screen ;) Thanks for your help, Philippe
