For those trying the above commands... the curl to get the patch files is likely not working. I'm not motivated enough on curl to figure out the problem, but i was able to copy/paste with a browser. If you are unsure, look at the patch files, git diff, the output of patch, etc...
For me the latest git did not fix the problem. Sean's (updated) patch also did not fix the problem. Alexander's patch *did* fix my problem. My use case is with a single display attached to a A/V receiver. Turning the receiver off, and back on did not come pack. Using alexander's one liner, it works great.
