I tested also  kernel 3.16.0-77 from
linux-headers-generic-lts-utopic
linux-image-generic-lts-utopic

and the problem starts from this kernel number also.
Here radeon 2.39 is in use. 
[drm] Initialized radeon 2.39.0 20080528 for 0000:02:00.0 on minor 0

same situation with too big screen resolution but no message about the:
"no scaling mode" in  xrandr --prop
