Oh the Xorg logs show:

  (EE) no screens found(EE)

so this is bug 1543192 but triggered by some unusual issue with Nvidia
driver 390:

  [   24.161625] nvidia-uvm: Loaded the UVM driver in 8 mode, major device

  [   24.420223] NVRM: failed to copy vbios to system memory.
  [   24.420545] NVRM: RmInitAdapter failed! (0x30:0xffff:663)
  [   24.420603] NVRM: rm_init_adapter failed for device bearing minor number 0

Please try:

  sudo apt install --reinstall nvidia-driver-390 nvidia-dkms-390

and reboot. If that doesn't fix it then please just:

  sudo apt remove nvidia-driver-390 nvidia-dkms-390

as a workaround.
