I can't beleive this was rejected for Karmic. If the driver is fglrx then do not do the other bug fix code that causes the performance problem! I installed the latest fglrx driver from ATI and applied the patch. PERFECT, all desktop effects worked perfectly and the speed was pretty good. But, of course there had to be a problem. I installed another package and I guess because the patch had an older xorg package version it decided to uninstall most xorg packages, so when I rebooted I had no X at all. Well I have X working again, with the ati driver, but I can no longer use fglrx driver as X fails to start.
