After removing the driver, removing xorg.conf, installing the driver using Jockey (it had to fiddle a little bit before Jockey offered me the possibility to select the binary driver, I believe I had to install some nvidia package) and after that running nvidia-xconfig solved the slowness for me. So, I removed myself from the 'affected' list.
