In other words, the suggested xorg.conf changes do not help -- the
problem certainly seems to related to server version as opposed to
generic.

Also, another clue, when the system suspends (I suppose it is going into
ACPI S3 mode) the xserver display seems to not wake up.  So possibly the
problem is that whether switching to VT or actually going to sleep, the
ACPI event that occurs will not wake the xserver.
