Yesterday I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on an elderly Dell desktop equipped with
82845G on board graphics and was hit by the stuck zebra crash reported here
about every 5 min. The xserver-xorg-video-intel was disabling DRI when it
recognized the chipset. The i915.modeset=0 workaround really worked for me - I
sucessfully tested for more than one hour. Then I tried reverting the driver by
installing
http://ppa.launchpad.net/brian-rogers/graphics-testing/ubuntu/pool/main/x/xserver-xorg-video-intel/xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.8.0-27-g926c7e7+lucid_i386.deb
. This driver works with KMS for more than 3 hours now and the OpenGL
performance is more than twice of the DRI disabled one. So for me there are two
workarounds possible.
Thanks
Michael
