Think I've got the same problem, I will edit grub ASAP. Using nouveau as
my driver I tested the following:

Normal Lucid: System hang after startx.
Lucid with "xorg-edgers" PPA: System hang after startx.
Lucid with "xorg-edgers" and "kernel-ppa" PPAs: System hang after startx and
in recovery mode (2.6.35-7-generic-pae).
Mavrick Alpha2 i386 desktop: N/A (the kernel doesn't even load, can't even run
memory test. I did md5 check, iso is not corrupt).

Hardware used to do the tests:
System Board: A7N266VM, Version: ASUS A7N266-VM ACPI BIOS Rev 1005 (11/19/2002)
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NVCrush11 [GeForce2 MX
Integrated Graphics] (rev b1)
        Subsystem: nVidia Corporation Device 0c11
Flags: bus master, 66MHz, medium devsel, latency 32, IRQ 19
        Memory at e3000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16M]
        Memory at e8000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=128M]
Expansion ROM at e7ff0000 [disabled] [size=64K]
        Capabilities: <access denied>
        Kernel driver in use: nouveau
        Kernel modules: nvidiafb, rivafb, nouveau

I'm currently using fbdev driver for software rendering, but cannot
change screen size higher than 1024x768. For more info, I've linked my
question to this bug see "Related questions" or follow this link:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/116801

PS: Typically system crash after startx is when gdm starts my screen
flashes green very quickly then black for about 3sec and then a second
green flash very quickly after the second flash my computer has locked
up completely.

Thanks for you time.
