Question #77362 on alsa-driver in ubuntu changed:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+question/77362

Mark Rijckenberg proposed the following answer:
Hi,

Please try this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following commands (copy/paste each command into the
Terminal and then hit <enter>)

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Add these 3 lines to the end of the alsa-base.conf file and save the
changes:

alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel index=0,1 enable=1,0 model=6stack-dell probe_mask=1

If the 6stack-dell model option does not work, try each of the following
model options one by one and reboot+retest sound after every change to
the alsa-base.conf file:

        ALC883/888

Step 3: Navigate to System/Preferences/Sound and change default mixer and

Step 4: Reboot pc and retest sound.

Step 5: If these model options do not work, please specify the exact
model and make of pc you are using. Please make sure to test sound on
both the internal speakers and headphones on all audio ports.

Regards,

Mark
