(WW) is actually meant as a hint, worse is (EE).
Although, how old is your BIOS and what about the battery?
Checksum errors likely go away when replacing CMOS battery.
e.g. I replaced the battery, this will reset CMOS, I did 'AUTO CONFIGURATION
WITH OPTIMAL SETTINGS' and had better acpi function e.g. hibernate (which I
didn't have before in the logout menu, only suspend), without screwing in any
config files. (And btw. I'm certainly not a tech expert)

You'll better see what's going on while booting, when taking out the 'splash'
in menu.lst; fancy, but not informative for the user.
e.g.
# defoptions=quiet nosplash
Since the boot text is running a little fast, you can stop and run it with:
ctrl+S
ctrl+Q
It's likely you'll get a hint from there.
Vadim, this is my gdm.conf, no change since 04/2008 on Hardy LTS, you may

There is also a gdm.conf.custom, but this is nothing else as the configuration
in
system administration -> login window
or
gdmsetup
But I tend to assume a graphic card or performance issue, so you may
backup xorg.conf and try the former one, if there was no issue with it.
