Vadim Radionov confirmed that the question is solved:
Sam, I finally figured out the root of the problem (with a little help
from my friends).
It is in libxcb-xlib0, which was upgraded last time. Downgrading it to
1.1-1ubuntu1 solved the problem totally. The error message that gave
the hint was
../../src/xcb_lock.c:33:_XCBUnlockDisplay: Assertion
`xcb_get_request_sent(dpy->xcb->connection) ==
dpy->request' failed
