Douglas Nimtz gave more information on the question: I made a new user, and system continues to crash and Display still won't load on screen beyond the panel frame. Concerning the fresh install, let me tell you what I did. I was running Windows XP Pro, and last week I decided to also run Ubuntu. So, I installed Ubuntu 9.04 resulting in a dual-boot machine. However, somehow I ended up with a linux partition that was only 2.5 gb and too small to provide for additional applications. Consequently, I did another install of Ubuntu 9.04 placed along side the first one after having deleted the default partition sizes listed on an install set-up screen so that this time Ubuntu would occupy all the unallocated space on the disk partition I had chosen. This worked like a charm, and I ended up with 15.4 gb for more linux software. Now, whenever I boot my machine, the boot manager (LILO?) lists two choices for Ubuntu and one for Windows XP, and it defaults to the second or last install of Ubuntu. Now, does this mean that I am running a fresh install? I think "yes" (how could one affect the other installed beside it?) You decide, since I am not sure what constitutes a "fresh install" when you use the term. I am fully updated (last update 13 hrs. ago Update Manager informs me).
