Thanks for the info, but I can not find any documentation anywhere about this "world plus image" format. Is there another name for it. Does anyone have examples or could explain it?

What I'm trying to do is to take building floor plans and add them as
images into my project. I'm assuming uDig can help out with
georeferencing the image, but I have a problem.

When I add a layer and select "files", then select one or more gif
files, the next screen says "No resources found" and disables the next
and finish buttons. What am I doing wrong?

I think you need to specify a little text file that says where in the world your image is located. The format is called "world plus image" and there should
be some reference docs (or an example) kicking around.

If I need to some how georeference the gifs beforehand, I have no idea
how to do that and would love some pointers in the right direction.

uDig would probably like it if you had a projection as well, but would assume lat/long.
