I think I know what might be causing that bug. When I was playing around with the SWT vs. AWT stuff, I was trying to set java.awt.headless=true like it is done for OSX (in one of the earlyStartup methods). I noticed that when I already had a map saved and tried to open it that way, the AWT pane would get loaded instead of the SWT pane. I think what was happening was that the other earlyStartup method which loads the saved projects was getting started before the one which was supposed to set java.awt.headless=true. So when the map got loaded it was getting loaded in an AWT pane. I assume that the same situation is occurring on OSX and causing the crash.

I'm glad Java 5 is out for OSX finally.  I was just reading some release
notes and it looks like many of our problems are being fixed.   So
that's great news.  Unfortunately we still don't have a mac to develop
on so we haven't been able to look at the known problems with OSX uDig.
I know that it won't start back up after the first run... or something
like that.   Kind of frusterating since we no longer have any technical
problems with OSX.
