I'm answering in-line to each of you points.
1. Does udig support dynamic adding and dropping of image layers? I have a
very large area to map, which is covered by about 250 Landsat 30-minute tiles
in .jpg format with world files. Clearly I can't load all of these images into
the map at the start. I need to be able to load only the ones in the user's
map frame, dynamically, as a user pans or zooms. Is this possible?
Right now this is limited. You will have to just try it out to see what
works right now. However there are 2 things that are going to happen
VERY soon.
1. A Coverage branch in geotools is going to be merged onto trunk.
This branch will have much much improved coverage support. I believe that
JAI is used so that very large coverages can be used without having to
load the entire image into memory. The ETA for this is sometime this month.
2. I ALMOST have an OSSIM plugin that can display almost any image. It
is really fast and has a very reasonable memory footprint. I just need
a couple days to finish it up. However I am pretty far behind my
original schedule. I am expecting some people to be able to help out on
that in April/May. If I haven't got it done by then.
2. Does udig support digitizing over the web? I need users to be able to draw
points or polygons on their maps, and have the shapes saved on the server.
You can edit WFS and PostGIS for certain. I am not sure about Oracle,
SDE or DB2 right now.
3. Does udig support spatial queries based on irregular polygons that the user
draws on the map? I need to be able to do this, pulling the spatial records
out and linking them to a MySQL database.
Not as of yet. It would be trivial to add this support.
4. Does udig support shapefiles?
Yes.
