suggestions for data source wizard
----------------------------------

         Key: UDIG-817
         URL: http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/UDIG-817
     Project: uDIG
        Type: Improvement

  Components: ui
    Versions: UDIG 1.1.RC0
    Reporter: Michael Brasser
    Priority: Trivial

We started using uDig with almost no prior GIS experience. One of the things
that was initially confusing was which catalog type to use in order to add
existing shapefiles and world files to a map. Two thoughts:

1. The types of data sources listed under "files" seem conceptually very
different to me, and I think it would make more sense if they were split into
two categories in the wizard -- shapefiles being one category and images being
the other. As an example, QGIS offers the options of adding a "vector layer"
(shapefile) or "raster layer" (image). Lumping them together just seems
somewhat arbitrary (ultimately aren't all data sources stored in some sort of
physical file on the device:-)

2. My first thought for adding a world file was to use "Map Graphic", as the
file I wanted to add was an image/graphic file. It might be worth thinking
about alternative wording, or additional description beyond "Add a graphic to
the map." For example, category name of "Graphical Map Aids" and description of
"Add a graphical aid (for example, a scale bar or grid) to the map."
