Are you interested in winging it on your own, or are you thinking of the
Web Processing Service standard? I would not mind chatting with you
further to see what angle you are coming from?
For the WebService side you will want to look at the GeoServer project
which provide a server side J2EE framework (ie module system) that will
let you both respond to requests and access some geospatial resources.
And uDig you well know is a good venue for producing clients of any of
these geospatial web services - including yours.

would like this development with Java and use uDig.
