Currently there is a license restriction, google makes the data
available via an AJAX api.
Several people have made a "bridge" between the google tile backend and
the and the WMS standard that we do support. The result is impressive
(but not legal).
So if you want something fun and legal make a renderer for the Nasa
worldwind tile cache, or contribute to the recent WMS Tile research
which our own Paul Ramsey is riding herd on.
If you really want that specific imagery you can of course buy it (or
license it), if you want the performance and not the data we can talk
about the tile solutions or you can set up MapServer with the blue
marble dataset.
Cheers,
Jody
Hi uDiggers,
Here comes a forwarded mail from Manoj Thakur, who, for whatever reason, chose
to send this question to my personal mail address.
Quoting Manoj Thakur (manoj.thakur <at> systemhorizon.com):

Matthias,
I am a very recent convert to PostGIS & PostgreSQL. I have been
playing around with uDig a bit. Is it possible to get Google Earth (via
Google Maps..Satellite or Hybrid.or any other way) into the uDig window ?
Through WMS or WFS, or any other way ?
My objective is to view my spatial data currently in SHP formats vis a vis
Google Earth imagery and update my data. I have also considered converting
my SHP into KML, editing the KML in GE and reverting back to SHP if
necessary. Given a choice I will prefer to load GE imagery into my GIS
Editor and make my changes and save.
Can you help ?
Thanks
Sincerely,
Manoj Thakur
