So you did not try the uDig1.2-SNAPSHOT release uploaded to the website then? 
If you could try testing your trunk with the new JREs that moovida put 
together; can I confirm that your trunk is using 8-SNAPSHOT?

Were you able to work with any gdal specific formats such as ecw or mrsid?
